René Scholten, president of Scholten Japanese Art, which opened its doors in New York in September 2000, began his career as a collector of Japanese art with a particular passion for prints.

He began acquiring works in the 80s, and his first major acquisition was a print by Torii
Kotondo entitled "Maquillage". From this first print, his collection grew rapidly, as did his involvement in
commitment to Japanese art circles in the Netherlands and beyond.
Initially, Mr. Scholten concentrated on Kotondo's contemporaries, primarily shin-hanga artists; but
gradually, he found himself drawn to the more traditional ukiyo-e prints of the 18th and 19th centuries as well. While
he gradually came to understand Japan through these representations, principally the Japan of the Edo period, his passion extended to other art forms as well.

Collecting Japanese art was a source of great joy for René Scholten, both for the beauty of the works and for the quality of the encounters along the way.

His experiences in the art world eventually encouraged him to open his own gallery in The Hague in 1995. Success came
