Monique Nanos was particularly curious and well-traveled. From her youth, and from her father who emigrated from Russia in 1917, originally from Kherson on the right bank of the Dnieper, now in the Ukraine, she had rubbed shoulders with a small Russian community in Paris, where the figure of Serge Poliakov, an artist of abstraction, notably emerged. This proximity undoubtedly shaped her artistic interests and education. As an international civil servant, posted successively in Rome (FAO), New York (UN) and Paris (UNESCO), she traveled the world and the arts, sometimes alone, sometimes with her sister Aline, but always with the same curiosity that led her to visit - with the same enthusiasm and sometimes a certain fearlessness for the time - the Dogon Country (1956), Mexico, Central America and the Romanesque churches of Poitou. At the end of her life, she set herself the task of learning Japanese; she was already fluent in three languages. Her art collection was built with a certain consistency around abstraction, with a passion for French artists such as Pierre Soulages, Tal Coat and André Marfaing, as well as other horizons such as the recently deceased Franco-Hungarian visual artist Vera Molmar and Arpad Szenes. Over the years, Monique Nanos has made friends with a number of artists, including Claude Chaussard. From each exhibition, each gallery, she brought back a postcard, a poster, a catalog, and very often a work of art. At the end of her life, she made major donations: to the Musée Dechelette in Roanne, almost her entire contemporary ceramics collection (174 pieces by 53 artists); to the Musée Cernuschi, works by two Korean artists; and to the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Beaubourg, three drawings by Léon Tututdjian. This auction marks the first "handover" of these works from the Monique Nanos collection to other collectors.
