Greenery with two birds - Lot 5
Greenery with two birds Flemish tapestry, Oudenaarde circa 1700 Woven in wool and silk (wool warp, wool and silk weft) Height : 310 cm ; Width : 340 cm In a wooded, undulating landscape abounding in detail, two native or exotic birds are depicted, their plumage preserved in beautiful colors. The dirt road on which they are standing guides the viewer's gaze to an unobstructed backdrop leading to a picturesque fortified town. In the distance are mountains and architectural remains. This tapestry is a fine example of remarkable craftsmanship. The imitation frame border with scroll motifs and brown tones is usually attributed to Oudenaarde. This type of composition can also be compared with the work of the Oudenaarde weaver Philippe Behagel. This beautiful greenery has retained its bright colors and original border. It is in a good state of preservation, with some wear and tear, fragile parts in the silks and old restorations. It is reduced in height and probably in width.
