Pair of Kachan rugs (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), centr - Lot 258
Pair of Kachan rugs (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), central Persia, circa 1930. (Good condition.) Length: 209 cm; Width: 135 cm. Each rug features a central red and ivory polylobed double medallion, extended by two pendants on a navy blue background and a red counter-ground enhanced by an elegant polychrome stylized floral design. The entire composition is embellished with four ivory spandrels. A wide red border with polychrome flower garlands is framed by two counterborders. Kachan was an early city renowned for its mulberry tree cultivation and silk spinning. Kachan fabrics and shawls were renowned during the Sefevid period (16th-18th c.), and many "Polish" carpets were woven here. In the mid-19th century, Kachan once again played an important role in Persian quality carpet production, thanks in particular to Mostashem, the weaver who gave his name to quality carpets.
