Orientals and Indians, known as L'Amérique. - Lot 174
Orientals and Indians, known as L'Amérique. Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson. In the taste of Joseph VERNET. Second half of the 18th century. Woven in wool and silk. (Beautiful bright colors, missing borders, wear in the silks, old restorations, reduced in height and width). Height 218 cm; Width 218 cm. This fragment illustrates a maritime scene in the style of Joseph Vernet. In the foreground, a Turkish merchant, recognizable by his long pipe, is chatting with a group of women. He is pointing to the action in the background: sailors aboard pagodas unloading cargo from the East Indies. Joseph Vernet's return from Italy in 1753 marked the beginning of a lively craze for maritime scenes, including in Aubusson workshops, where weavers drew inspiration from engraved models. Fascination for the dreamed-of Orient, faraway lands and their foodstuffs and luxury goods, permeated the compositions. The oriental characters, identifiable by their costumes, are mixed with the personification of America, wearing a feathered headdress and carrying a bow and quiver. Expert : Alexandre CHEVALIER
