Jan Jansz BUESEM (Amsterdam 1599/1600-1649 or later). - Lot 19
Jan Jansz BUESEM (Amsterdam 1599/1600-1649 or later). The Card Players. Oak panel, one board, not parqueted, signed lower center: Buesem. (Minor chips.) Height 33.5 cm; Width: 47.8 cm. Provenance : - Adolphe Schloss Collection. - His sale, Paris, Galerie Charpentier, May 25, 1949, no. 11. Bibliography : - Walther Bernt, Die Niederlandischen Maler und Zeichner des 17. Jahrhunderts, volume 1, ill. 221. Like his master Pieter Quast, Jan Buesem was inspired by Adriaen Brouwer to paint interior and cabaret scenes, in a warm color range close to that of his younger brother David Téniers. He accentuates the grotesque character of these artists, bordering on caricature, with a sense of humor all his own. This painting is one of the artist's two or three masterpieces.
