LYON - After Nicolas-Henri TARDIEU (1674-1749) and R.P. Clau - Lot 18
LYON - After Nicolas-Henri TARDIEU (1674-1749) and R.P. Claude-François MÉNESTRIER (1631-1705) : Map of the ancient city of Lyon. Spectacular east-facing cavalier map of Lyon. It is decorated with the coat of arms of France and the city of Lyon, three cherubs representing the winds Eurus, Auster and Chorus, and two cartouches, one of which features allegorical representations of the Saône and Rhône rivers. The text contained in these cartouches tells us that the city is depicted as it was under the reigns of François I and Henri II, as well as the changes that have been made since then. This engraved plan by Nicolas-Henri Tardieu was commissioned by Father Claude-François Ménestrier, the famous Jesuit historian from Lyon, to illustrate his Histoire Civile ou Consulaire de la Ville de Lyon. A burin engraver, Tardieu was a pupil of Lepautre and later of Gérard and Bernard Audran. A perfectly preserved copy. Publication date: 1700. Height 66 cm; Width: 84.5 cm. Framed, under glass. Tooley Revised Edition, vol. 4, p. 247.
