Bears the founder's stamp "CIRE PERDUE C. ES 12, p. 164. Provenance: Collection Jacques & Michèle GINEPRO In 1008, as the plague ravaged Valenciennes and its suburbs, the inhabitants prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. She encircled the town with a scarlet cord and healed its faithful in exchange for the promise of an annual procession following the line of the cord.
