Paris, à la Revue parisienne, 1840; 3 issues in one volume, in-16, 396 pages, antique red chagrin binding, ribbed spine, monogram CJK gilt on upper cover, interior lace, gilt head, cover and spine, this one browned. First edition of this review written almost entirely by Balzac. First editions include Z. Marcas, Un prince de la bohème, the arrow against Sainte-Beuve "restorer of the boring genre" and the famous study on Beyle and La Chartreuse de Parme. - A fine copy. - Joint from the same source: HISTOIRE DE L'EMPEREUR racontée dans une grange par un vieux soldat et recueillie par M. de Balzac. Paris, J.J. Dubochet; J. Hetzel et Paulin, 1842; in-16, bradel garnet half-percaline, green parts, cover (slightly faded). - First authorized edition. It is decorated with 56 VIGNETTES BY ALCIDE LORENTZ. One of them, on page 71, is said to be inspired by Balzac's traits. Fictitious mention of third edition on cover. 4 leaves torn but not missing. Some paper browning. Copies from the library of the Balzacian Roger Pierrot.
