BALZAC Honoré de. Novels and philosophical tales. Third edition. Paris, Ch. Gosselin, 1831; 3 volumes. - Nouveaux contes philosophiques. Ibid, id, 1832; together 4 volumes in-8, bradel red cloth bindings of the second half of the 19th century, black parts, entirely untrimmed (Pierson).
Second and third edition of La Peau de chagrin, first or second edition of the 12 tales that follow. There is no first edition of the Romans et contes..., La Peau de chagrin (1831), taking its place. The second and third editions are identical except for a few details. -Three woodcut frontispieces after Tony Johannot.
First edition of the Nouveaux contes philosophiques, decorated with a frontispiece by Tony Johannot (fictitious mention of second printing). Some foxing at the beginning of volume I.
Copy of Edmond and Jules de Goncourt, attested by a pencil note at the end of the first volume, in the hand of their bookbinder Pierson saying: "de Goncourt rouge, pièces noires" and by their presence in the sale catalog of the Goncourt library, Modernes, 1897, n° 60.
