BALZAC Honoré de. Le dernier Chouan ou la Bretagne en 1800. - Lot 78
BALZAC Honoré de. Le dernier Chouan ou la Bretagne en 1800. Paris, Urbain Canel, 1829; 4 volumes in-12 stapled, a few small bumps in the margins, spine of volume IV split without missing, folders and a case. First edition of Balzac's first novel signed with his name (without particle). IT IS VERY RARE according to Carteret and Henri Dirkx. AUTOGRAPHIC ENVOILED ON THE FALSE TITLE: "The author to Mr. Germeau H. Balzac". A friend of Balzac and Latouche, Stanislas Germeau (1790-1867) had published the same year as Le dernier Chouan, La Réforme en 1560 ou le Tumulte d'Amboise. Prefect of the Haute-Vienne and then of the Moselle, he was, according to several of his contemporaries, the legitimate son of Duke Pasquier. A very pure copy in spite of minor reservations: in volume I, some staining and foxing and some faded leaves; the 24 pages 145-168 in duplicate; volume II: tear without missing 2 leaves; volume III: small lack of white paper on 2 leaves. Copy of Roger Pierrot, the publisher of Balzac's Correspondence.
