ALBUM DE MUSIQUE NOTÉE with calligraphied lyrics and origina - Lot 16
ALBUM DE MUSIQUE NOTÉE with calligraphied lyrics and original pen-and-ink drawings. Paris, May 1749; in-4 oblong (175 x 235 mm) of [1] ff (title), 170 pages, [4] ff (table), contemporary binding in midnight blue morocco, gilt fillets and gilt pomegranate on the corners of the boards, spine decorated with gilt motifs, red piece (gilt title "Airs choisis"), inner lace and gilt edges. VERY NICE MUSICAL ALBUM, CREATED WITH EXTREME REFINEMENT, as much by the elegant calligraphy of the texts as by the drawings that illustrate the tunes, their accuracy of form and their extraordinary finesse of line. Several hundred sketches, vignettes and pen-and-ink drawings decorate all the pages with great invention, fantasy and always exquisite taste: bouquets, musical instruments, flowerbeds, furnished or flowered baskets, insects, mollusks, characters, various animals, birds, monuments, shells, crustaceans, various objects. The airs with notated music are taken from operas in vogue: Iphigénie, Pygmalion, Zaïs, Polydore, Les Indes galantes... Others are banter songs, drinking songs or songs related to the pleasures of the table. No name of artist, musician or owner appears in the collection. A coat of arms on the frontispiece repeated at the head, although not captioned, gives the name of the sponsor of this beautiful work: Pierre-Jacques Girard de Vannes (1705-1767) grand master of the Waters and Forests of Ninervais, bailly of sword of the same province. His daughter Marie-Jeanne de Vannes married Louis de Choiseul, marshal of camp. The beautifully executed morocco binding, with starred paper lining and endpapers, can be attributed from 1760 to Nicolas Denis Derome (or earlier to his father Jacques-Antoine Derome). One reads at the end discreetly calligraphed in a cartouche : " Fin. May 1749)".
