CHATEAUBRIAND François-René de. Autograph letter initialled - Lot 3
CHATEAUBRIAND François-René de. Autograph letter initialled [to the Duchess of Duras]. London, May 3, 1822; 4 pages in-8.
Chateaubriand, French ambassador in London, is unwell: "The vigils and the work, which is considerable, have made me excessively tired. [...] "I do not bother Villèle, but I had to make an effort for the royalists at the time of the elections and not let Villèle perish without at least warning him of the danger. As for the Congress, which is the main thing for me, Villèle can have no reluctance. He could not worry about my desire to enter the ministry [...]. I prefer a thousand times better to remain ambassador in London, with leaves of absence every year, at the time when nothing is done in the country [...] between the sessions of the Parliament ". He takes care of what worries his correspondent. He hopes that the publication will not take place and "that at the price of money one can at least obtain the removal of the letter or at least the paragraph..." He suspects Salgues or rather Saint-Victor to be the publisher or even Dentu. "Georges Caraman left this morning for Paris. It is indeed Jacques Salgues who was going to publish shortly afterwards in three volumes Les Mille et une calomnies ou Extraits des correspondances privées insérées dans les journaux anglais, allemands, pendant le ministère de M. le duc Decazes. Do not tell anyone that I am suffering Mme de Chateaubriand will run like mad. Tomorrow I will be cured.
