Paris, Michel Lévy frères, 1857; large volume in-12 of [2] leaves, 490 pages followed, antique binding, garnet morocco, twelve gilt fillets framing the boards (2, 6, 3, 1), ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets, large inner lace and gilt edges on witnesses, light green cover (repaired at the outer margin of the first board), slipcase (Devauchelle). First edition. Copy on strong vellum paper; 75 copies were counted by Auguste Lambiotte (Le Livre et l'Estampe, number 12, 1957; number 14, 1960). AUTOGRAPHIC ENVOILED ON THE FALSE TITLE: " to Mr Clogenson, to the devoted friend, to the charming spirit, to the man, to the poet, the author and his book Gustave Flaubert ". Jean Clogenson, French politician (1785-1876), prefect then deputy of the Orne, president of the Academy of Sciences, Belles-lettres and Arts of Rouen, had published some essays on Voltaire which may have amused Flaubert.
