BAUDELAIRE Charles. The Flowers of Evil. Second edition. Par - Lot 35
BAUDELAIRE Charles. The Flowers of Evil. Second edition. Paris, Poulet-Malassis et de Broise, 1861; large volume in-12, old red morocco binding, five gilt fillets on the boards, ribbed spine decorated with boxes of five gilt fillets, black morocco lining decorated with five cold fillets, red silk endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine, folder and case (Semet & Plumelle). Partly original edition including 35 unpublished poems and several others reworked but without the six condemned poems. There were 4 copies on China paper, 6 on strong vellum paper and some on Hollande laid paper. The large paper copies of the second edition of Les Fleurs du mal are rarer than those of the first edition. One of the few copies on Hollande paper. Of these we know the one of the Goncourts, the one of Nadar and this one. A note found in the publisher's papers said: "There were only a few copies on thread (Hollande) and on China paper, which I reserved for myself". Beautiful portrait of Baudelaire drawn and engraved on copperplate by Felix Bracquemont, here in a proof on China paper before the letter. MAGNIFICENT BINDING IN MOROCCO LINED WITH SEMET & PLUMELLE MOROCCO.
