HOURS FOR THE USE OF PARIS. manuscript on vellum skin, in latin and french paris, ca. 1500; small in-8 (175 x 124 mm; justification 90 x 58 mm; calendar 93 x 80 mm) of 165 leaves (mis-coded 164) with 17 long lines per page, textura writing, binding apparently of the period purple velvet of which only the texture remains, spine with four nerves, edges gilt. A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT FROM THE VERY END OF THE 15TH CENTURY BY TWO UNIDENTIFIED BUT DISTINCTIVE ARTISTS. A, the master of Martainville-183; B, the master of Jean d'Albret. The Master of Martainville-183 was so named by Jean Lafond who in 1927 reproduced Un livre d'heures de l'école de Jean Bourdichon (in the library of Rouen). E. König followed him as well as C. Zöhl (Jean Pichore graphiker und verlager in Paris zum 1500, Turnhout, 2004, pages 46-47, reproduction page 44). Close to Jean Pichore but not having worked with him, he is fond, as here, of half-body figures, derived from the "Flemish dramatic close-up", taken up by the French illuminators Jean Bourdichon and Georges Trubert.
